Background of the Study
Healthcare workers are pivotal in the successful administration of vaccines and the overall performance of immunization programs. Their attitudes toward vaccine administration can significantly influence vaccine uptake, patient trust, and adherence to immunization schedules. In Katsina State, healthcare workers are at the frontline of delivering immunization services; however, their perceptions and attitudes towards vaccines and vaccination protocols vary considerably (Ibrahim, 2024; Adeyemi, 2023).
Several factors may shape healthcare workers’ attitudes, including personal beliefs, training quality, workload, and institutional support. Positive attitudes are essential for ensuring that healthcare providers offer accurate information, demonstrate proper vaccine handling techniques, and effectively communicate the benefits and potential side effects of vaccines. Conversely, negative attitudes—potentially arising from skepticism about vaccine safety, inadequate training, or burnout—can lead to suboptimal vaccine administration practices and reduced immunization coverage (Chukwu, 2024).
In Katsina State, recent challenges such as vaccine hesitancy among the public have been linked in part to healthcare workers’ communication styles and attitudes. It is therefore critical to assess the attitudes of healthcare workers toward vaccine administration to identify potential areas for improvement. This study will examine the attitudes of healthcare workers across various healthcare settings in Katsina State, explore the factors influencing these attitudes, and evaluate the impact on vaccine delivery. The findings are expected to guide targeted training programs and policy interventions aimed at fostering positive attitudes and improving immunization services (Ogunleye, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
In Katsina State, inconsistent attitudes among healthcare workers toward vaccine administration have been identified as a barrier to achieving optimal immunization coverage. Many healthcare workers express reservations regarding vaccine safety and efficacy, often influenced by inadequate training or personal beliefs. These attitudes can compromise the quality of vaccine administration, reduce patient confidence, and contribute to lower immunization rates (Lawal, 2023).
Furthermore, the lack of regular, standardized training and continuous professional development exacerbates these issues. Inadequate institutional support and high workload further contribute to negative attitudes, which may manifest in poor communication with patients and suboptimal vaccine handling practices. These factors collectively undermine public trust in immunization programs, ultimately affecting the overall success of vaccine campaigns in the region.
Addressing healthcare workers’ attitudes is crucial for improving immunization outcomes, yet there is limited research that specifically explores these attitudes and their determinants in Katsina State. This study seeks to fill this gap by systematically assessing the attitudes of healthcare workers, identifying factors that influence these attitudes, and determining how these perceptions affect vaccine administration practices. The ultimate goal is to develop evidence-based recommendations for interventions that promote positive attitudes, thereby enhancing the overall effectiveness of immunization programs.
